On September 27, 2008, the Rotary Club of Asheville flew another 100 World War II veterans from Buncombe County to Washington DC to tour the World War II memorial and witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Arlington Cemetary. They also visited the Korean, Lincoln, Vietnam and the Women's Memorial.
The Rotary Club of Asheville also flew WWII veterans to our Nation's capitol on September 29, 2007 and May 10, 2008, making a total 300 WWII veterans who have made the trip to see their own memorial.
We adopted this community service project to show our appreciation to those veterans for the many sacrifices that were made. Many of us tend to overlook the accomplishments of these veterans and take for granted what they fought for. We live in a free country because of their patriotism and valor.
